What Is DTF Printing? A Complete Guide to Direct-to-Film Printing



DTF printing, short for Direct-to-Film printing, is a method of decorating apparel by printing a design onto a special film and then transferring it to fabric using heat and pressure.

DTF can reproduce detailed, full-color artwork and works on many different fabrics, making it a versatile choice for custom T-shirts, sweatshirts, uniforms, bags, and other apparel.

How Does DTF Printing Work?


The name actually describes the process pretty well: the design is printed directly onto a special film rather than onto the garment itself.

The basic DTF process involves several steps:

1. The artwork is prepared digitally.
Your logo, graphic, text, photograph, or other design is prepared for printing.

2. The design is printed onto transfer film.
Specialized DTF inks reproduce the artwork, including a white ink layer that helps colors remain vibrant on dark garments.

3. Adhesive powder is applied.
A special powder adheres to the printed ink and allows the design to bond with the fabric.

4. The transfer is cured.
Heat prepares the adhesive and ink for application.

5. The design is heat pressed onto the garment.
Heat and pressure bond the transfer to the fabric.

6. The film is removed.
The result is a detailed, colorful design permanently applied to the garment.

Unlike traditional screen printing, DTF doesn't require preparing an individual screen for every color in a design. That difference opens the door to some interesting possibilities.

What Are the Advantages of DTF Printing?

 

Full-Color Designs


DTF can reproduce designs with many colors without requiring separate screens for each one. That makes it especially useful for colorful company logos, illustrations, photographs, gradients, and detailed artwork.
 

Excellent Detail


Fine lines, small elements, intricate graphics, and complex artwork can reproduce extremely well with DTF.

Large Designs Can Have a Heavier Feel


Because a DTF design is transferred onto the surface of the fabric, large areas of solid color can feel heavier or less breathable than smaller, more open designs. This can be especially noticeable on lightweight shirts or apparel worn in hot weather.

Good artwork makes a difference. Designs that incorporate the garment itself as part of the background and leave some open space can feel considerably lighter.
 

DTF Has a Different Look and Feel
